Supported Independent Living (SIL) Assessments for NDIS Participants

Supported Independent Living

Supported Independent Living (SIL) is an NDIS funding stream for participants who require 24-hour support to live independently or in a shared living environment. This includes completing a SIL (supported independent living) assessment to outline the level of daily support required. SIL funding covers the cost of daily support provided by support workers, but not rent, food, or utilities.

It is designed for individuals who need significant assistance with activities of daily living throughout the day and night. SIL arrangements aim to promote independence while ensuring participants receive consistent, reliable care to live safely in the community.

What’s Included in a SIL Assessment

A SIL assessment provides a detailed understanding of the daily support a participant requires across morning, daytime, evening, and overnight routines. Your supported SIL test explores areas such as personal care, safety, meal preparation, medication routines, behavioural support needs, and environmental factors.

We are Sydney-based and work with participants across Australia to ensure recommendations clearly reflect daily living challenges and required support ratios. Each report is designed to align with NDIS expectations and demonstrate the evidence needed for the appropriate SIL funding level.

More info

  • A SIL assessment follows the standard Functional Capacity Assessment (FCA) process, with an extended focus on home and living support needs. Your Occupational Therapist will:

    • Explore your current living situation in depth

    • Assess the level of support required across a 24-hour period

    • Determine the most appropriate support ratio for safety and supervision (e.g. 1:1, 1:2, 1:3)

    • Provide a clear SIL recommendation, including a proposed 24-hour support roster

    • Identify any risks if SIL is not funded (e.g. safety concerns, carer burnout, social isolation)

    • Justify the recommendation under the NDIS Reasonable and Necessary criteria

  • Once the SIL Functional Capacity Assessment is complete, your Support Coordinator will usually gather all supporting documentation, including the OT report and proposed roster of care, and submit it to the NDIS for review. If approved, SIL funding will be included in your NDIS plan to implement the recommended support arrangement.
